SLJ W1 D4 A1

Week 1

DAY 4: More than Meets the Eye

Activity 1: Scaling New Heights [4 points]
Aotearoa New Zealand is a country of mountains and valleys, dense forests, and sparkling oceans.
At the centre of the South Island sits the tallest mountain in the country, Aoraki Mt Cook. It is the place
where Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to reach the top (summit) of Mt Everest, learned how to climb
mountains. It was pretty difficult for him, at first, but Sir Edmund Hillary did not give up and, in 1953,
he achieved this dream of climbing Mt Everest. His face can now be found on the New Zealand $5 note!
Let’s imagine that you met Sir Edmund Hillary in real life and were able to interview him.
On your blog, post five questions that you would like to ask Sir Edmund Hillary about his life.

  1. How long did it take you to get to Mt Everest summit?
  2. What could you see from the top?
  3. Did you want to give up ?
  4. Did you think you would get to the summit?
  5. What did you eat to survive?

  2. Hi Jess

Its Allie from the SLJ team. Great to see that you have completed so many activities. Evelyn is on holiday at the moment so I am reading through all the blogs. You have got some great questions here for Sir Edmund Hillary.
I wonder what you could see from the top? Imagine how far you could see on a great day. It would depend on the weather. Imagine the difference when you climbed Mount George! The day you did it was fine and you could see a long way but imagine a rainy day with lots of clouds. It would be really disappointing.
Great question to ask if he felt like giving up. It would be a huge thing to climb this and I am sure that many people have thought about giving up when they were part of the way up. Did you feel like that?
What do you think he might have eaten? I wonder what if tasted like? I can't imagine feeling so cold and trying to get food ready to eat. All you would want would be something hot!
Great that you have added some images to your post. Remember to attribute your images. I will but a link below and if you copy and paste this into your browser and follow how to do this. This is something you will have to do when you get to High School.
